Way
back in March I talked about jumping on the no-shampoo bandwagon and I
thought I’d give you guys a little update. Stage one of the plan is
almost complete! (stage one being transitioning to washing my hair less
often) I now wash my hair two days a week, on Sunday night and
Wednesday night (I’m a night-showerer, which works well because D is a
morning-showerer so we’re never fighting for turns). Washing my hair
much less often has led to two realizations:
1.
I’m using much, much less shampoo. It’s kind of crazy how little
shampoo I’ve gone through. I told myself I’d use up all my current,
sulfate-full shampoo and then
make the switch to baking soda. I had no idea those last two bottles
would last over 6 months. I’m almost done with the final one, at which
point I’ll start washing my hair with baking soda.
2.
My hair gets dirty/oily much slower. I used to cringe at not washing
my hair every other night, and sometimes all I could do on that third
day was throw it in a bun and hope to look presentable, but lately it
looks totally normal and not greasy even after three days of no shampoo.
I feel like this is definitely progress.
I
imagine moving into stage two, which will be actually washing my hair
with baking soda and using apple cider vinegar as conditioner, will be
more difficult. I’m fully prepared to wear my hair up in buns or hidden
under hats while I get the hang of it. However, I’m also really
looking forward to getting rid of a bunch of bottles in the shower and
not having to schlep tiny little containers of shampoo and conditioner
through airport security. I’ve been streamlining my beauty routine in
the last few months and have gotten my “liquids” pared down to
shampoo/conditioner, face lotion, toothpaste, and contact lens solution.
My goal is to only take one carryon bag for our 10-day trip to Italy
in March. Simplifying my hair routine will definitely help.

i am so jealous this is working for you!! my hair is just too fine/thin to pare down my washes any further - i have tried!! (when my hair is dyed - aka damaged! - i go 2-3 days between showers with no problems, but as soon as my original roots grow back in it's like Oil Slick Central if i try and go my normal 3 days.) stupid baby hair.
my carry-on liquids have like QUADRUPLED in recent years, and it's super lame. i should try and do something about it too!
I wash about twice a week, but with shampoo. I will say that it definitely takes some training to get your hair to be able to last beyond one day without washing, but isn't is so nice to have one less thing to worry about? I can not travel with a carry on only, because I can't figure out how to pare down my liquids into one tiny bag. I'll be super jealous if this works for you!
I try to wash my hair every other day, but sometimes it can get ugly if my curls aren't cooperating and the only thing that helps is wetting them. That is awesome, getting your routine down to only a few products is great and will make traveling so much easier for you!
Do you exercise daily? I can't imagine not washing my hair after a workout but if you've gotten to a point where you don't have to, or at least not as often, then I'd be willing to give it a shot too! I do and intense workout every day though so I didn't know if this would still pertain.
I think this is really cool that you've reduced how often you wash your hair. I shampoo my hair 2-3 times a week and condition it 3-4 times a week. It's been just fine on my hair ... though, I'm not really doing it as any sort of experiment or anything.
Ha I love this and that you're having such great success with it. I haven't been brave enough to go there but I always love reading about others who have good experiences. Will be interested to see how the baking soda part goes. And I'm with you--all about light packing on trips and keeping beauty items to a minimum and via safer products!
it's so cute of you to have scheduled days to shampoo your hair. it reminds me of the olden days when monday was laundry, tuesday was darning, etc. i want to do this!
I can't wait to see how it goes. I only wash my hair 2-3 times a week anyway, but I have never considered actually going fully no poo.
I am glad this is working so well for you! I haven't tried not washing my hair every day because I was sweating so much when running, I didn't think it would be a good idea to skip shampoo. ;)
