It’s kind of crazy how quickly June flew by, right? I know that as one gets older time in general seems to fly, but June really
moved quickly. Maybe it was all that traveling I did. In an attempt
to slow down time I thought it would be a good exercise to revisit my
Summer of George list and see how I’m doing.
First off, we’ve been seeing a lot of movies. We watched more movies in June than we did the entire spring semester. We saw The Avengers at the South Side Works Cinema for their $5 Movie Mondays and it was awesome. Not something I’d want to pay more than $5 for but definitely a cheap, fun, school-night activity. When we were in Nicaragua, the only movie theater in Granada was showing The Avengers the entire time we were there (someone warned us that the theater was pretty gross so we decided to see it in the States instead) but instead of “The Avengers” it was billed as “Los Vengadores!” which is now and forever what I will call it in my head, and sometimes out loud with an adopted Spanish accent. We also saw “Hysteria” on a whim one afternoon and it was funny and just delightful. I wanted to take advantage of Pittsburgh’s Movies in the Parks so we trekked to Schenley not too long ago to see “Captain America.” D wanted to know the backstory of Captain America and I wanted to know if they were going to show more of Chris Evans in those tight blue pants. Done and done.
We’ve also been riding our bikes more and more. D bikes to school every day but I walk or take the bus and don’t get out on my bike very often. I wanted to change that this summer, and have had plenty of opportunities to ride instead of driving. We rode to a garden tour in Lawrenceville, to the farmer’s market, to the park a few times, and back and forth to school on the weekends to study or go to the gym. While I’m not as experienced as D is on the road, I did feel like kind of a badass riding in my sundress down Fifth Avenue on Sunday like it was no big deal. We also felt pretty superior riding to a concert in the park the other day and hopping off right at the entrance while the people in cars were waiting in an endless line for the three parking spots in all of Point Breeze.
Weekly picnics were big on my list of things to do, now that D has a more flexible schedule and time to eat lunch with me. We’re lucky enough to work within walking distance of each other, and meeting up once a week to eat together in the park is such a nice midday treat. Maybe I’ll be able to convince him to keep this up once school starts again in the fall.
Much to the chagrin of my waistline, we’ve also been drinking lots of yummy summer beer. I’m new to beer as an acceptable form of alcohol, so I tend to still only like the light, summery wheat beers (with NO hop aftertaste, please). Luckily that’s what is popular this time of year and every time we go to buy beer I’m almost dizzy over the possibilities. My current favorite is Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy but I’m loyal to no beer and it could be a completely different one next week. Got any suggestions for me?
I’ve still got a huge list of things I want to do in the next two months or so but with fall already on its way, I’m glad to see that I’ve accomplished a few of the things I wanted to. I never felt this urgency in Texas, where summer lasts from February to November, but the solstice screams IMPENDING DOOM OF WINTER to me and I want to take drink up every last drop of summer while I’m able.

We have so many of the same things on our summer bucket list! I love that you're taking such great advantage of D's time off from school! Summer Shandy's are the best; I'm not sure there's anything better than them. Seriously.
I totally get the beer and waistline thing. Gah. Summertime is so perfect for those crisp wheat beers, but not so perfect for the waistline. And summertime beer hangovers are the actual worst.
Some of my favorite summertime beers are: Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, Magic Hat #9, Blue Moon, Dogfish Head Aprihop, Dogfish Head Festina Peche (if you can find it!), and Magic Hat has one called Elderbetty (I think?) that's interesting.
Yay for summer!
I love mid-day lunch dates! The hospital is right around the corner from my office so we try to meet up as often as possible. Definitely a nice break from work. That's so great that you have picnics - you guys are so cute!
As for beer, I'm still pretty much anti-beer. But the one that I actually have been able to like is Yeungling. Oh and this random Cherry beer from Founder's Brewery in Grand Rapids. Only problem with Yeungling, they don't sell it in Michigan. But lucky for you it's a PA beer! ;)
“Los Vengadores!” I love it!
When it comes to beer I pretty much stick to Bud Light, and I only started liking that in the last year or so. I wish I could find others that I like, but I guess I'm just not a beer person.
It sounds like you are taking advantage of your summer! I love that you are riding bikes as much as possible. My boyfriend just got one and I am thinking of doing the same, as we don't have a car and you can get places so much faster! I love living in a town that is bike friendly!
If you are looking for a new fun beer, Petes Wicked Strawberry Blonde is good.
Your summer is off to a great start! I love all the biking you have been doing. I also feel like a bad*ss biking in a dress and heels. I get some (not so nice) looks (mostly from women) but oh well! I don't feel like changing clothes to bike to and from work!
JAIL TRAIL.
Ahahahaha.
Jim dragged me on the Jail Trail + Eliza Furnace (maybe?) trail around the rivers before I left to make sure I could ride a bike in the city. It was fun, though :)
