Summer of George*

Finals are officially over.  We survived our first year as a PhD student and student’s girlfriend.  That sound you just heard was me whooping with joy.  D still has plenty of stuff to do this summer (he’ll alternate between conducting research and studying for the very important quals at the end of the summer) but he won’t be taking classes, which means no more late-night study sessions, no more weekend-sucking homework assignments, no more deadlines.  Well, with the exception of the quals on August 20-21, but let’s not talk about that right now.  Instead I want to talk about how I finally get my boyfriend, my partner-in-adventure, my accomplice back.  We can explore the city!  We can make plans that don’t involve sitting in a coffee shop for hours on a beautiful Saturday in the interest of getting work done!  We can finally do all the things that I’ve been thinking about and making lists of for the last nine months.  This includes:

-Take a tour of the Allegheny Observatory
-Go to the Carnegie Museum of Art
-Have a picnic or ten
-See movies again
-Hit up yard sales
-Go to Kennywood (an amusement park, of sorts)
-Drink lots of delicious summer beer
-Go swimming
-Ride our bikes everywhere
-Go to the zoo
-Try lots of yummy new restaurants
-Make popsicles
-Take lots of hikes
-Buy our produce from the farmer’s markets
-Go camping

And generally have a lot of fun in the sun with my best friend.  I can hardly freaking wait.

All of that sounds like a lot of fun, especially the hikes part! I love getting outdoors and getting exercise at the same time (and seeing beautiful things)! I am so glad you are going to have time to do some fun things!

I love this post. I love that you want to take advantage of having your partner in crime back. You're going to have so much fun this summer and I can't wait to hear all about it!!

Congrats on you guys getting through year 1! Also, you forgot to put boat weekend on that list of fun summer things ;)

Annnd, I'm guessing since comps are Aug. 20th that means D won't be able to come to the wedding??? :(

Hooray! Congrats on getting through your first year of the PhD program. It was most definitely a joint effort. I mean, I am sure D would be lost without you! I am glad you have the summer to enjoy. It's good to have a list of things to do! I have one in mind for when I am done with my CFA exam!

Kennywood is so awesome! All Sundays in May are BOGO days at the gate and there are some BOGO days in July too. Any other time, make sure you pick up your tickets at Giant Eagle on the way :)

A PhD program? Whoa! Impressive! I know how much work that is. Well, my husband did it 10 years ago so I sort of know how much work it is. It is worth it though!

My husband was a PhD student -- you're right, life is totally different once they're done taking classes that first year. Congrats!

On the topic of popsicles, what about these: http://www.thekitchn.com/party-drink-striped-ice-cubes-169354

I'm thinking of making them in September for my returning/housewarming, lol.
