I don't know what the world of the written word is coming to. I'm shaking my head and wagging my finger at all the grammar slackers out there today. I can't turn around without finding horrendous spelling and grammar errors in my newspaper (Statesman, be ashamed), in a book (where was your editor?!), or even on, gasp, my favorite blogs. You people ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Also, you kids gettoffa my lawn! And turn down that teenybopper music, pronto!
Seriously though, I am horrified at some of the stuff that makes it out there. Mere hours earlier I received a company-wide email from a Very Important Higher-Up that was fraught, fraught I tell you, with grammar and spelling mistakes. He sent this email to the entire company. Now I realize that I make mistakes all the time. More grammar than spelling, because this is my weakness, but if I am going to send something out, say an email or letter or A PUBLISHED BOOK, I proofread it carefully. Then I walk away for a while and then proofread it again, and then I send it to my editor (ie mom or dad) to proofread it one more time before I send it off. Once something like that gets sent out, its out (Blog excluded, of course, this thing is a mess and I fully realize that).
One of my very favorite blogs, one that is written by someone who seems very intelligent and well-spoken (well-written, whatever) committed a nails-on-chalkboard awful offense in a post this week. I won't tag or name this person because I enjoy the blog immensely, but let's just say that it is "should have" instead of "should of." Seriously. You write things for a living. If it looks weird to write it down, or it sounds weird to say it slowly out loud, try again.
