Two Degrees from Lisa Ling

When I was a freshman in high school I was friends with a guy named Kevin. Kevin was a go-getter, very smart, Mr. High School. He was also very nice and friendly to a lowly freshman like me. We were in Academic Decathlon together. Yes I'm that cool. Anyway, in my school and many others around the country, we watched a made for middle- and high school students news show called Channel One. On this show was a beautiful young anchor named Lisa Ling. She has the best hair of any news anchor I have ever seen. Each year Channel One had a competition called Student Production Week where talented high schoolers who wanted to go into Broadcast Journalism could submit a tape to be on Channel One. If chosen, the students went to wherever Channel One was taped and worked on their production for two weeks. Some students were involved in behind the scenes action and some were student anchors. Kevin, with his talented ways and his deep James Earl Jones voice, was chosen to be one of Channel One's student anchors. How exciting. Anyway, Lisa Ling was an anchor at the time that Kevin was chosen to be on Channel One and he got to meet her. He also got to hang out with her, work with her on anchor-type-stuff, etc. And...ask her to prom. Not even kidding. He said they were joking around one day and he mentioned how he and his girlfriend had just broken up and he was without a date to prom. Lisa (supposedly) jokingly said that she would go to him. Haha. It was their inside joke for the rest of the week. Then student production week wrapped up and Kevin came back to high school. We all watched him on Channel One and were very proud. About a week later I was sitting in the Academic Decathlon room with Kevin and a couple of other people after school when his cell phone rang. He picked it up and walked out of the room and the rest of us continued with our conversation. A couple of minutes later he came back into the room with the biggest grin on his face. Lisa Ling had just called him to ask if he still needed a date to the prom.
